Starmer Backs Streeting Despite Growing Resignation Rumours in Labour Crisis
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has publicly expressed “full confidence” in Health Secretary Wes Streeting, despite mounting reports that Streeting could soon resign and launch a leadership challenge against him.
The political turmoil inside the Labour Party intensified after several ministers and lawmakers openly questioned Starmer’s leadership following heavy local election losses. According to reports from UK media, allies of Streeting have suggested the health secretary is preparing to step down from government and position himself as a potential successor to the prime minister.
Streeting reportedly held a brief private meeting with Starmer ahead of the King’s Speech, a major parliamentary event outlining the government’s legislative agenda. Downing Street later insisted that Starmer continued to support his health secretary and dismissed suggestions of an immediate cabinet split.
The crisis comes as pressure on Starmer continues to grow within Labour ranks. More than 80 Labour MPs have reportedly called for him to step down or set a timeline for departure after the party suffered major setbacks in recent local elections. Several junior ministers have already resigned in protest, accusing the government of weak leadership and political drift.
Despite the growing rebellion, Starmer has refused to resign, telling cabinet members that he intends to “get on with governing” unless a formal leadership challenge is triggered. Supporters argue replacing the prime minister now could create further instability for the UK economy and government.
Streeting, one of Labour’s most high-profile ministers, has long been viewed as a possible future party leader due to his popularity among centrist MPs and his handling of NHS reforms. However, neither Streeting nor his office has officially confirmed plans to resign or challenge Starmer.
The unfolding power struggle has deepened uncertainty in British politics, with analysts warning that Labour could face a prolonged internal battle at a time of economic pressure, rising borrowing costs, and declining public confidence in government leadership.
