Philippine Senator Wanted by ICC Flees Senate Amid Arrest Fears
Philippine Senator Ronald dela Rosa, who is being sought by the International Criminal Court (ICC) over allegations tied to the country’s deadly anti-drug campaign, has reportedly fled the Senate complex after days of political tension and fears of imminent arrest.
Dela Rosa, a former national police chief and close ally of ex-President Rodrigo Duterte, had taken refuge inside the Philippine Senate while his legal team attempted to block any effort to detain or transfer him to The Hague. The ICC is investigating alleged crimes against humanity linked to thousands of killings during Duterte’s controversial war on drugs.
According to Philippine media and government officials, the senator quietly left the Senate building shortly after security concerns intensified following reports of gunshots and heavy police activity near the complex. Authorities have not officially confirmed his current location.
Supporters of dela Rosa accuse international prosecutors of politically targeting Duterte allies, arguing that the ICC no longer has jurisdiction over the Philippines after the country withdrew from the court in 2019. Human rights groups, however, insist accountability is necessary for victims of alleged extrajudicial killings.
The dramatic escape has deepened political tensions across the Philippines, where the Duterte legacy continues to divide public opinion. Security around key government buildings in Manila has reportedly been increased amid fears of further unrest and demonstrations.
Legal experts say the case could become one of the most significant confrontations between Philippine authorities and the ICC in recent years. Meanwhile, opposition lawmakers are demanding clarity over whether state agencies attempted to arrest the senator inside the Senate complex.
The ICC investigation remains ongoing as international attention grows over the Philippines’ handling of human rights cases connected to the anti-drug campaign.
